I listened to a lot of classical music growing up, and played piano pieces by many of the Romantic era masters. Beethoven was a favorite of mine -- I loved not only the technical mastery, but the moody, sometimes restless conjurings his sonatas evoked. The adagio movements in his piano concertos filled me with longing, nostalgia, and a bittersweet peace.
I dreamt this piece one night, and it came flowing out at a relatively fast pace. I finished it in several days, but then stared at it for a week to make sure that it had no more notes to sing. This is a peaceful, wistful and dreamy piece, with just enough hope in it for you to listen to it again.

I painted this in the fall of 2009. I had been in Seattle for just over three years but still really missed the changing leaves, vibrant colors, and that crispness in the air on the East Coast. This was meant to be a 4-part series of the different seasons, but I only completed Autumn and Winter.

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this son of York;
And all the clouds that low'r'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

It took Spring forever to formulate in my mind -- and even when she did, it wasn't a fully formed thought. Instead she made herself known in bits and spurts. I have no doubt that the inspiration, in part, came from an unseasonably warm two weeks we had in February.

I used to doodle a lot during school. My favorite doodle was simply putting pen/pencil to paper and making stream-of-consciousness loops & angles in a continuous line. This was one of the pieces I tried to translate onto canvas. I was interested in how the forms and colours would relate to one another on the black canvas.
